NEWS RELEASE  -  Red Deer Church Turns 80

September 30, 2016 –Deer Park Alliance Church is celebrating its 80th anniversary in Red Deer this fall, with a special commemorative service.

While the city has grown much over the last eight decades, the church has remained a steadfast place of worship, meeting the spiritual and physical needs of the community, as well as people around the world.

Deer Park Church, located at 2960 39th Street, can trace its roots back to 1936, when the founders first met in a rented hall is what is now downtown Red Deer.

“Many soldiers from the A-20 Camp in Red Deer and airmen from the Flying Training School in Penhold attended those early services,” noted Ron Crossley, Chair of the 80th Anniversary Celebration.  “The first church was actually an army barracks moved from A-Camp.”

Crossley’s grandparents were among those who helped the growing group move to a facility in north Red Deer in 1948. He is among several families still involved with the church with connections back to the original founders.

In 1949, the church officially became part of the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination. It wasn’t long before the faithful congregation outgrew its first facility, building a church at the corner of 60th St and 54th Ave, which was ready by 1962. Stepping out in faith, the group next bought property in 1976 on what was then the eastern outskirts of town, wanting to move into areas of the city where there was a need for a church. By 1979, the present building was complete, and continues to be home today.

From providing regular benevolent assistance and initiating a place of refuge for the homeless, to hosting the Singing Christmas Tree program, members have been committed to the community, as well as to the Christian and Missionary Alliance of Canada denomination. Local church members have done missions work in places like Venezuela, Turkey, Niger, India, Mexico, Thailand, Philippines and Spain, to name just a few. As well, the congregation has helped launch several other new church families, including the Kentwood Alliance Church in north Red Deer, as well as churches in Ponoka, Stettler, Innisfail, Lacombe and Sylvan Lake.

“As a church family, we have been blessed to see the Lord at work in our midst, and humbled to spread His Word,” said Rev. Ben Elliott, current Deer Park Lead Pastor. “It is that heritage we honour on our 80th anniversary, and we invite all who have been connected with our church to join our celebration. Deer Park Church has been ‘built together’ and that’s our theme.”

The 80th Anniversary Service begins at 10:15 am October 23rd, to be followed by a luncheon and fellowship. All are welcome.
